Lapis Lazuli has been prized as a gemstone for over 6,000 years in many different civilizations. The ancient Egyptians used it to create amulets of the Goddess of truth, Maat and the famous Cleopatra is Believed to have crushed it and used the stone as eye shadow. The Summarian Goddess of love, Inanna is portrayed as carrying a Lapis rod and wearing Lapis Jewelry as she entered the underworld. Powdered Lapis was also used to create the rich, deep pigment “unltramarine” which was especially popular during the Middle Ages.
